Eden Faction Spotlights

These are the three factions available to players of the Eden Colonies LARP Weekender. You can join the conversation about it over here.

Settlers Rest Townsfolk Faction Spotlight 

The Settlers rest faction makes up the bulk of the players in the Eden Colonies larp. They are also the most diverse lot in terms of gameplay with one thing in common, a job which the players fulfil.

The jobs range from medical staff, town posse, bartender and pretty much anything you can come up with. We will work with you and help you create your job and role in the town, to help you make your mark in the game.

Many of the roles will have you be in important and needed positions allowing you to meet and interact with a large number of players and NPCs.

Distant Stars Research Group (DSRG) Faction Spotlight 

The DSRG faction is another large presence inside of Settlers rest, they run a small research outfit in the town comprised of corpers. They supply the bulk of work for Runners in the town, getting them to explore ruins, protection for researchers and anything else they need.

This faction is good for players who enjoy minigames, puzzle solving and roleplaying scientific research. Also this faction is great for new players and players who prefer to have a focused driven plot.

As well you will be interreacting heavily with every faction in town, to get help with research, building strange devices and buying supplies.

DSRG members can be researchers, engineers, medical staff and guards.

Out of Towners Faction Spotlight –

The out of towners faction makes up the travellers who move through settlers rest, the bulk of these are Runners though small groups of Nomads, Corpers and merchants usually fill in the rest.

This faction will have you entering the game as a new comer to the town, great for players who are interested in exploring the world and learning things as their characters do.

A bulk of the gameplay will focus around the reason you are in the town, if your a merchant your here to buy and sell goods. If you are a runner you are here to take and complete a range of jobs.

We will be making the process of getting jobs, getting ready for jobs and completing them an involved and fun process. They won’t always be as straight forward as they seem and decisions will need to be made.

Do you spend the extra cash around town to make the job easier? Or do you risk it hoping you don’t get shot to pieces.

This faction can be extremely flexible, while most will join as runners we are happy to work with you to create a fun experience in the Eden Colonies.

Creating LARP Rules Pt 3

Advice for writing rule books for LARP systems.

When crafting a rulebook think about how the player is expected to design their character and position the chapters in such a way that the player can build their character while going through the rules. If they have to jump around between chapters, perhaps find ways where box outs containing summary information can plug the gaps and allow for a smoother progression through the chapters. If you’re unsure how to proceed, turn to someone who has read a lot of rulebooks for assistance.

When double checking if your rule book is easy to read, see if there is someone who is willing to help you who has difficulty reading (even if simply due to lack of time) and pay close attention to what they have to say. When people check rule books during games they are going to be tired, stressed and in a hurry so their experience will be a closer match to players on the day.

Eden Colonies LARP In-World History

Since the last game there was a 5 year time skip. In this time much has happened on the Eden Colonies. The Mega corporations have weakened in power, new global powers have arisen and the tensions are high.

Here is a sneak peak of the timeline in the last 5 years.

2355 – Massive Inc collapses –

After struggling for years and pressure from the syndicalists, Massive incorporated let go of hundreds of thousands of employees, at the same time abandoning hundreds of border towns, under the guise of downsizing. This loss of leadership and vacuum of power was quickly seized by Edison Space Services and the syndicalists.

Massive Incorporated were able to survive after losing a significant amount of their assets but their control over their workers and general power base on Eden took a significant hit.

2356 – Union of Independent Border Towns announces freedom from Corporate rule.

Without their corporate overlords, hundreds of towns were left in the dark, though assisted by the Syndicalists, Runners and Nomads they were able to survive, even thrive. The Border towns then agreed to work together. With the Syndicalists help they created the Union of independent Border Towns or UIBT and publicly announced freedom from corporate rule.

The UIBT is an organisation that helps facilitate diplomacy, communication and trade between the border towns no longer not under corporate control. The Border towns are now a haven for Nomads, Runners and those who wish to forge their own path.

2356 – Rise of the Eden Alliance –

During the collapse of Massive Inc plenty of their assets were left to rot. Edison Space Services seized the opportunity to expand their assets by either purchasing or acquiring them through force. After consolidating their power Edison Space Services renounced their membership with the CCC (Corporate Colony Court) and renamed themselves the Eden Alliance. They believe that to survive on Eden the human race must work together and the needs of the many must be put before the needs of the few.

2357 – Fall of the Corporate Colony Court –

WIth the loss of power from MassiveIincorporated and Edison Space Services, the Corporate Colony Court took a huge hit to their stability, not to mention the pressure from the UIBT which now has enough buying power to strong arm the corporations into submission. With their grip loosened on the Colony and many of the corporations afraid of themselves collapsing the CCC was disbanded, with the resources used to maintain the CCC used to keep the surviving Corporations afloat.

2358 – Runner code revised, the Freebooter is born –

After working closely with the UIBT for some time the Runners adopted a new code which frowned upon the lying, cheating and stealing ways of some of the more free spirited runner types. This led to a large number of runners quickly getting their third strike, though instead of surrendering to their ill gotten fate they split from the runners and became the Freebooters.

Freebooters are runners without a code and pretty much do anything for a job, no matter who they are working for or who they are up against. They are actively shunned and even hunted by Runners, especially if they have a bounty on their heads, which they usually do.

2360 – Freebooter gangs running rampant –

News across Eden that Freebooters are starting to organise into large pirate gangs and their presence has gone from nuisance to a serious threat to the denizens of Eden. Largest of these groups are rumoured to have seized military ships from the Eden Alliance and serious bounties are on their head.

Eden Colonies FAQ

What is the Eden Colonies?

  • The Eden Colonies is a nordic inspired weekend LARP set in a “Western Frontier Sci Fi” setting, focusing on the trials and tribulations of a small border town in an interplanetary colony called Eden.

What will game play look like?

  • Over the course of the weekend you will be put into the shoes of an interplanetary colonist on the frontier. You will fill a role inside the town, or as visitors to the town, with a largely reactionary and player driven play style.

Game system?

  • We will be using a range of nordic consent mechanics, the game itself will be non numerical with no hitpoints or anything like that. There will be workshop before game to practice the mechanics and game system.

When will the game be?

  • We are looking at at the 10th to the 13th of June 2022.

Sci-fi western? What does that mean?

  • Basically the aesthetics and themes of westerns with a large focus on frontier life with a sci-fi twist.

Will there be factions/backgrounds?

  • Yes, the townsfolk, DSRG and “out of towners” (Runners, merchants etc). More information on backgrounds will be in the new updated rule book.

Will there be combat?

  • Yes there will be combat at the game, but it is not a focus like heavy combat games like Desolation. We will be using nerf guns and approved foam weapons throughout the game.

Is this a combat mandatory game?

  • Yes, but we will be creating a few mechanics to help those that wish not to be attacked to avoid it. These will be de-escalation mechanics and a surrender mechanic.

The story?

  • The story of the game will focus on the trials and tribulations of the town set 5 years after the previous game, as well with a focus on discovery, creation, hard choices and change.

There was a previous game, how will that affect this one?

  • One thing we are trying to do is each game can be seen as its own standalone story. With the actions in the last game building on the lore of the world, but not forming the plot. New players will not need to know who did what and exactly what happened during the last game to have an enjoyable experience

My previous character can I bring them back?

  • Yes, but you will need to create a character in the same manner as we did last time. As well your character may not have the roles, positions, items as they did last time.

Will there still be applications for roles in the game?

  • Yes, and we will be filling in those roles after we have released the new rulebook. The roles will be similar to the previous game, though the story behind a lot of the roles has been put into the hands of the players.

GM notes – The previous game was a bit of a prologue, setting up the world that most of the games will be in. Now things are up and running we are putting a lot more power into the hands of players to create and sculpt the town and even the world of Eden Colonies. This means we will be a bit more flexible in character creation and the flexibility of the characters of the special roles.

The Eden Colonies

This is an original western-styled frontier and sci-fi larp that has been inspired by the “Outer Worlds” video game and the TV series, “Firefly”. This larp is about surviving on the outskirts of civilization, in a small colony settlement run by the corporations who colonised the planet.

Players will get to play out their character’s daily life and experience what it’s like living in a dangerous unfamiliar world with little supplies, while being stuck between unyielding corporations and total wilderness.

We aim for this LARP to be very rules light and heavily story driven by the players. We strongly encourage players to approach the Game Master (GM) Team with ideas for story and/or props they would like to bring into the game.

We are currently busy working on the next game and boy am I excited to get the next event up and release the updated rulebook (hopefully soon).

By we I mean the new GM team of Eden Colonies, last game it was me, Tom, and Nicola who more informally managed various portions of the game. But for our sanity we have brought a new member onto the team and have split the jobs more evenly instead of putting too much on one person.

Myself (Tom) will be the Head/Story GM I will be managing the event as a whole and also writing and managing the story as a whole in game. Working closely with both the NPC and PC GMs.

Nicola will be our Player character (PC) GM, helping with character creation, PC roles and PC management in the game. So she will be your first point of call with issues in the game on site as a player, as well as working closely with those with special PC roles.

Lachlan will be our Non player character GM, managing the NPCs and encounters during the game as well as creating a lot of the NPC based experiences during game.

Kingsford GM Introductions Part 2

🌟 and one more enters the fray 🌟

I would like to welcome and introduce the final member of our organisational team from Camp Clemency this year, the NPC GM!

Kaliska is an irregular face around ARC, mostly because of the long commute. He will be handling NPC schedules, coordinating NPC briefing and debriefing, and of course occasional plot points. Already a long-standing storyteller, with over too many years of experience, both in LARP and Tabletop gaming, Kal has worked with a number of small and large games studios in the world and narrative development. We hope he won’t break anything valuable.

And with that, we are closer than ever to having our event up for this year’s game and we can’t wait for you guys to immerse yourselves in this magical world with us once again!

NPC Characters at Kingsford

🐇 they aren’t always what they seem 🐇

Similar to the normal Kingsford School of Witchcraft game, we are looking at having some amazing NPC characters running around the grounds of Camp Clemency causing some mischief.

Most, if not all, of our NPC players, have a main Fae character that they will help design with our NPC GM. This is how they will be for the majority of the weekend.

You will be required to change out of that main character on occasion to fit any scenes that will be going ahead, but you will be told of this with as much notice as we can!

As an NPC, you are the ones giving information to the players. Putting forward the story, giving clues, and helping advance whatever schemes that they have going during the weekend.

Similar to teachers, our NPC will have a reduced ticket price! We haven’t finalized our budget 100% yet, so prices will be released once the event is live!

If this sounds like something that you would be interested in then keep your eyes out for when applications open!

NPC GM POSITION OPENING

We also have an open position in our GM team for this year, that being the NPC GM!

The role contains helping create and facilitate the plot, organizing NPC shifts before the game, communicating with NPCs before and during the game, and helping with general GM duties.

Character Creation For Kingsford 2022

🐇 you make this world amazing 🐇

Now that more information has been released about the game, we should go over how character creation for this game will be going down.

One major thing to mention straight up is that there won’t be any characters that are completely new to the school/magic. Each character will already be in a house heading into the game and due to this, there won’t be any sorting ceremony.

First years are at camp to be able to continue into second year.

Second years are at camp to be able to continue into third year.

Third years are at camp to be able to graduate.

RETURNING CHARACTERS?

Thus, you are able to bring back characters that you played in previous years. However, you will still need to put in a character application if you choose to do this for this game.

In regards to houses for characters, players who are bringing back characters will have priority to house slots.

If you are bringing in a new character, please let us know during the quiz and we can have a chat with you in regards to where you would like your character to be!

Like in previous years, we would like to keep the houses as even as possible for the event! Just to keep everything fair!

CHARACTER FLAWS

As mentioned in the premise for this game, there is a reason why you have been sent to Camp Clemency. There is no one that is good at all types of magic, and you are no different.

It is your choice as to what subject your character has been failing at, but there has to be at least one. Of course, you can, by all means, have more than one but that is completely up to you as a player.

There will be a question in the application to select which specific class you haven’t passed, or an ‘other’ option if you would like something a little different.

DIFFERENT ROLES

We are currently playing around with the idea of having Camp Councillors for this game.

This will be one student from each house, no matter what year, that is there for extra credit. They are students that have passed all of their courses and are only here because they want a little more learning/house points for the new school year.

This gives a few players a little bit more responsibility in trying to herd some of the more misbehaving students and helping us organise a small party to celebrate the end of camp! (With a few bonus house points given for the next main iteration of Kingsford)

As the storyteller, I would like to know if this is something that you as the players would like for the game. Please let us know in the character creation form, or if you do think of something later, let the Player GM know. While we can’t promise it’ll make it into the game, it will definitely be considered.

Creating LARP Rules Pt 2

Should the skill stay or go?

Ultimately, this is up to you and the style of game but please remember that every mechanic adds an extra layer of complexity to the game. It takes brain power to remember the mechanics, identify the signifiers that the mechanic is coming into effect, and then respond accordingly.

If the skill is super intuitive (I shoot you with a NERF gun and if the pellet hits you act like you’ve been shot) than the brain power needed is less than if it’s unintuitive (I shoot you with a NERF gun and if the pellet hits you than you are super hungry for Weetbix if the light in the room is green or chocolate if the light in the room is red).
