ARC Code of Conduct

Page logo

ARC Inc. seeks to create a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for everyone in our community, whatever their background. We are guided at every level by our values of good sportsmanship, respect, responsibility, inclusivity and trust.

Our community does not just include our members. Building a community that supports these values is a collaborative effort that involves everyone who participates in our games and activities. As such, we endeavour to encourage and promote the values of ARC Inc. through our activities and through our relationships with participants and the wider community. This Code of Conduct covers all participant behaviour at events and online in ARC’s online channels. In some instances, serious safety concerns that occur outside of these areas may be considered.

Because we engage in emotional roleplaying, our events can have an effect on a player’s emotional state. We still expect the code of conduct to be followed.

As ARC members and participants, we will:

  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of others, in private and in public.
  • Respect and support other people’s consent and boundaries, including the boundaries of game organisers.
  • Be considerate of other people’s backgrounds, even when we do not understand them.
  • Accept responsibility for our actions at all times, especially when they hurt people.
  • Be aware of our own mental health and wellbeing, and be proactive in caring for ourselves.
  • Listen and change our behaviour when we say or do something hurtful, regardless of our intentions.
  • Respect and support players who are distressed, where possible, and be willing to pause our activities when needed.
  • Respect the authority of position holders. Pursue disagreements through appropriate channels.
  • Be respectful of private information that is shared with us, especially as pertains to health, disability, mental illness, trauma, and sexuality or gender identity.
  • Address issues and concerns we may have with ARC Inc., its committee or its membership in a reasonable manner.
  • Comply with relevant laws and abide by rules, regulations and policies set by ARC.

When participating in games, we will:

  • Practice good-sportsmanship and remember that people are more important than games.
  • Obey any game-specific rules and use game mechanics in good faith.
  • Attempt to understand the rules and seek clarification when in doubt.
  • Endeavour to make our games and activities enjoyable and satisfying for participants, and to foster a spirit of fun and trust in our community.
  • Accept that what is fun for us may not be as enjoyable to others.
  • Base our playstyle and expectations on the style guide for the game/campaign.

As game organisers and coordinators, we will:

  • Treat people fairly, compassionately and with respect.
  • Identify our conflicts of interest to the committee when dealing with disciplinary matters and, where possible, recuse ourselves from decision making.
  • Avoid favouritism or the appearance of favouritism.

Harassment and Discrimination

ARC Inc. takes a zero-tolerance approach towards intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, derogatory or demeaning conduct towards members, participants, and those we interact with in the course of our activities.

Zero-tolerance means that when any of these behaviours take place between members or at an ARC Inc. event, it will be investigated and disciplinary action will be taken if required.

See the Policy Handbook for more information.

Consequences

Breaching the Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action ranging from a warning through to termination of membership.  Criminal matters will be referred to the police.
